31/07/2017: Gael Force Engineering stalwart retires as new generation takes the helm

After some 17 years of intense work and dedication, Managing Director of Gael Force Engineering John Offord has retired

John has spearheaded the development of Gael Force’s engineering capabilities, specialising in marine and land based steel, reinforced concrete structure, assemblies and components, playing a pivotal role in the advancement of the SeaMate Feed Barge range, and latterly contributing to the company’s progress in pontoon and breakwater manufacturing.

Gael Force Directors say farewell to John. From left to right Stephen Offord (Production Director, Gael Force Engineering), Jim Brown (Operations Director, Gael Force Marine Equipment), John Offord, Stewart Graham (MD Gael Force Group), Jamie Young (Sales Director, Gael Force Group).

Reminiscing about successes, John Offord said “When I joined Gael Force, I was originally drafted in for three months to help start up our engineering division. 17 years later and we are building feed barge number 80, we have just completed the Oban transit berthing facility and have a very healthy enquiry book! I’ve been very lucky with my career choices and have enjoyed the challenges which have come with my time with Gael Force. At the end of the day how much you enjoy your work or otherwise comes down to people, and there are a lot of very good people at Gael Force.”

Looking to the future, John says, “There is a great future in Gael Force and I hope everyone else who works here finds their career as satisfying and rewarding as I have. For me though, the runway is getting shorter so it’s time for me to move on and complete some of the other challenges I’ve set myself. I’ve still got 84 of the 282 Munros to complete and next year I’m looking forward to sailing my boat back to Scotland from Palma!”

Speaking of John’s departure, Gael Force Group MD Stewart Graham said, “I have never met anyone more knowledgeable, resourceful and fearless at taking on a challenge. On more times than I care to remember John has dropped plans at short notice over evenings and weekends to simply do whatever needed done, always showing great stamina and resilience. Not only will we miss him as a colleague, he will be sorely missed at Gael Force and by the wider Scottish Aquaculture industry too.”

Succeeding in John’s place is Stephen Offord who has been working with Gael Force in the position of Production Director for over two years; experience which is bolstered by his past 11 years as an Engineering Officer with the Royal Navy.

Stephen has worked very closely in a professional capacity with John over these past two years, collecting a colossal amount of tips and wisdom from him. He also comes with the added benefit of being John’s son, inevitably meaning that the continued knowledge will be available ‘on tap’.

28/07/2017: USDA announces $15 million public-private investment to improve critical wetlands

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service today announced that the agency will award $13 million to projects in seven states to protect, restore and enhance wetlands on private and tribal agricultural lands

The projects are being funded under the Wetland Reserve Enhancement Partnership (WREP).

“These locally-led partnerships are instrumental in achieving greater wetland acreage and maximising their benefits to farmers, ranchers and the local and rural communities where wetlands exist”, NRCS Acting Chief Leonard Jordan said.

Wetland reserve easements enable landowners to successfully reduce impacts from flooding, recharge groundwater, enhance and protect wildlife habitat and provide outdoor recreational and educational opportunities.

WREP project partners are investing nearly $2 million in these projects, bringing the total investment to approximately $15 million. In total, the projects will help to protect, restore or enhance over 25,000 acres of wetlands in critical watersheds across the nation. These partners work directly with eligible landowners interested in enrolling their agricultural land into conservation wetland easements.

Today’s announcement includes high-priority watershed projects in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee.

Image credit: Andy Arthur on Flickr under Creative Commons License
Arkansas

The purpose of this project is to utilise the partnering strength of the Tri-state Conservation Coordination Committee to collaboratively develop and implement a multi-state WREP project that focuses on restoration of forested wetlands within priority portions of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, including specific targeting of priority watersheds of the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative (MRBI). The project will address the three primary natural resource concerns for the Mississippi River Basin: water quality, water quantity and wildlife habitat, including critical habitat for the Louisiana black bear, migratory waterfowl and wetland-dependent wildlife. NRCS plans to invest $4.8 million in this project to restore more than 1,500 acres.

Georgia

Recovery and delisting of federally Endangered Canby's dropwort is a priority for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Canby's dropwort occurs in cypress savanna depression wetlands, and 18 of 21 of its occurrences are on privately owned agricultural lands. The primary objectives of this proposal are to protect the entire Canby's dropwort populations, protect and restore high priority cypress savanna and cypress swamp habitats, and implement a sound management plan that prioritises restoration of the rare species and habitats within the project area. This project will also provide the resources needed for protection and hydrologic and habitat restoration for the Neyami Savanna wetlands, which will help advance the recovery of Canby's dropwort. NRCS plans to invest $1.19 million in this project.

Mississippi
The purpose of the proposed project is to protect the vegetation and hydrology restoration on easements by trapping and removing feral swine and enhance habitat for migratory waterfowl on easements by providing wetland management plans and practice incentive payments to eligible landowners. NRCS funds will be directed towards monitoring, assessment, management plans and documentation of feral swine damage to properties. NRCS plans to invest $3 million in this project.

Tennessee

The purpose of this project is to achieve more sustainable land and water management in the active floodplain of the Lower Mississippi, thus providing significant ecological, economic and societal benefits. This is predominantly restoration and enhancement work of existing easements. The proposed project constitutes the fourth phase of a continuing effort that began in 2012. Efforts to date under Phases I-III have resulted in applications of enrollment for approximately 16,000 acres of private land in the project area. NRCS plans to invest $4 million in this project to restore or enhance an additional 1,301 acres in Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee.

26/07/2017: Poeth announces the energy efficient and low maintenance, AirConveyor, for transporting powders and granulates

Poeth has designed its new AirConveyor specifically for companies that want to transport powders, pellets and granulates cost-effectively and efficiently

This innovative system offers companies 75 percent less maintenance costs after approx. three years operating time and consumes 40 percent less energy.

The air-supported conveying system from Poeth is suitable for damage-free transportation of bulk goods over short or extremely long distances. The AirConveyor generates low noise emissions and is dust-tight. As a result, the new conveying system from Poeth also has a minimum impact on the environment.

Powerful air cushion supports the conveyor belt without the need for rollers
Poeth has developed a new and efficient generation conveying systems where the conveyor belt floats on a cushion of air. Poeth's AirConveyor features a perforated channel and compact, specially designed fans.

By providing a constant supply of exactly the right quantity of air, Poeth has succeeded in creating a powerful air cushion directly under the conveyor belt in its new conveying system. This powerful air cushion makes it possible to raise the conveyor belt, along with the bulk goods it carries, and keep it airborne based on the same principle as that used by a hovercraft.

Only one conveyor roller, located in the drive, tensioning and belt return station, is needed to set the conveyor belt in motion. Poeth's new AirConveyor eliminates 95 percent of all moving parts in comparison to traditional belt conveyor systems. As a result, Poeth's AirConveyor generates far less friction.

This makes the air-supported conveying system 40 percent more energy-efficient and significantly reduces noise emissions (<80dbA). Fewer moving parts result in much less maintenance and negligible conveyor belt wear.

Fewer rotating parts also provide less heat and less risk of exposures. The AirConveyor is suitable for extreme circumstances and difficult to reach places. This also makes the new AirConveyor extremely reliable and cost-efficient.

Homogeneous, damage-free conveying over long distances
zThe new belt conveyor from Poeth is suitable for transporting raw materials in the feed, food, chemical and bulk industries. The AirConveyor is used to transport a wide variety of products such as salt, sugar, cereals, seeds, animal feed, biomass, coal, ore, sand and gravel. The advantage of belt conveyors is that they transport products without agitating them.

Consequently, the new AirConveyor from Poeth is ideally suitable for conveying fragile, explosive and sticky raw materials without risking separation. The new AirConveyor is capable of high-capacity transportation (3 m3/hour – 2000 m3/hour), both horizontally and vertically.

Poeth offers its AirConveyor as an enclosed, dust-tight system for both indoor and outdoor application. The AirConveyor is also available according ATEX and Food Grade guidelines (FDA, EC 1935/2004 and 3.1B material certificates).

25/07/2017: ILDEX Indonesia kick-off and gathering 2017

Organisers of ILDEX Indonesia 2017, PT. Permata Kreasi Media along with VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific, Co., Ltd. held an ILDEX Indonesia Kick-Off and Gathering 2017, as well as discussions with “Enhancing the Competitiveness of Animal Protein In the Hyper-Competition Era” as a main theme, at the Ibis Hotel, Jakarta on the 18th July

The Kick-Off was carried ahead of ILDEX Indonesia 2017, an event which will be held October 18th-20th, 2017 at Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran, Jakarta. Participants of the Kick-Off are stakeholders in livestock, consisting of government, associations, business actors, and farmers.

Dr Ir. Arief Daryanto and Dr Erwidodo came as the speakers and moderated by Prof. Dr Ir. Muladno, MSA. Director of PT. Permata Kreasi Media, Fitri Nursanti Poernomo, said that ILDEX Indonesia 2017 is held by  various parties.

The third exhibition of ILDEX Indonesia is expected to improve the quality of livestock industry in Indonesia. Nino Gruettke, Managing Director of VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific, Co., Ltd. said that Asian countries that have rapid economic growth and monitored by global investors are Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and upon those countries there is Indonesia. “That’s why we put our focus specifically in this country,” he explained.

Nino said that in addition to more international (this exhibition is followed by 250 leading companies from 27 countries plus pavilion from China and South Korea.), it will also feature three industrial zones, covering feeding and animal health; feed milling and agricultural equipment; and genetic, breeding, and processing.

“The number of exhibitors has increased by 22 percent from the previous edition and now 80 percent of booths are sold out. At this moment of ILDEX, several companies increased their exhibition area by 50 percent, as well as many new companies. Our target is to have 8,000 visitors present at this exhibition,” Nino said.

He explained that there are many benefits to be gained for the participants as well as visitors in this edition of ILDEX. This exhibition is not only offering the latest livestock innovations for the upstream to the downstream sector, but ILDEX Indonesia 2017 also offers great potential in terms of business. “Many international companies are joining, both new and those who have participated in the last edition,” he said.

Director General of Livestock and Animal Heatlh, I Ketut Diarmita, represented by Fadjar Sumping Tjatur Rasa, said in his welcome speech that he is glad to see ILDEX Indonesia 2017. Livestock sub-sectors still plays an important role for the development process in Indonesia, especially in rural areas. “Livestock contributes 1.62 percent to the national gross domestic product in 2016. In addition, the livestock sub-sector role in providing animal food consumption tends to increase,” he said.

Juan Permata Adoe, the Deputy Chairman of The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) Strategic Food Industry Sector, mentioned that increasing the productivity of farmers by 60 percent, will meet the domestic demand. Thus, it is very important to find solutions that can benefit all stakeholders.

“If domestic demand is met, Indonesia has a great potential to become a net exporter of agricultural products, supplying more than 130 million tons to global market. Therefore, the government needs to implement synergistic policies in order to generate sustainable growth and profitable income for all sectors, covering farmers, private sector, and government,” he explained.

Arief Daryanto, Economic Expert of the Livestock Industry from Business School of Bogor Agricultural University, said that there are six key factors to success in competing in the livestock sector.

1. The existence of an appropriate climate that makes the cost of cage management becomes cheaper.
2. Low labour cost.
3. The strong support of corn and local soybean production is abundant.
4. The existence of contract farming between core companies and plasma farmers (can use cooperative schemes).
5. The existence of large companies with good management, modern equipment, innovative and market driven (market driven)
6. The existence of a conducive investment climate.

This was a truly formidable WAS aquaculture conference

www.was.org
What can I say, other than well done to all that made it such a success! Attendance was superb, with more than 1,400 delegates alone from over 35 African countries that had all been sponsored by the African Union.

In all we know there were in excess of 2,500 visitors as we had brought over 2,000 of our International Aquafeed magazines to the exhibition and they were all gone by the third day. With the theme of “Sustainable Aquaculture” what better place to kick this off than in Africa, after those immortalised words were uttered by Roger Gilbert the then Founder and secretary General of the IFIF said in the presence of Kofi Annan at the UN in 1997 “We need to feed 9.5 billion people by 2050”.

But how? Well these number and sentence have driven a crusade across the globe to focus on and work together to solve this issue. It was therefore no surprise that Dr Rohanna Subasinghe, the former chief of Aquaculture at the FAO, opened the conference with this very same topic. What followed over the coming four days were 70 excellent conferences on a multitude of topics and in between the conferences, the many delegates could visit the exhibition hall and visit with the over 100 exhibitors.

We have included a selection of exhibitors from the event over the coming pages and if you missed out on this wonderful event, please make sure you are at Aquaculture America next year being held at the Paris hotel in Las Vegas.

The opening

World Aquaculture 2017 was officially opened by the Guinean Ambassador to South Africa as unfortunately President Alpha Condé was unable to make it due to last minute unforeseen circumstances and the President of the African Union. In the opening speeches the panel focused on the “spotlight on Africa’ theme and the importance of conferences and show like WAS for the whole African community.

The chance to meet a global audience has been a key factor when the group decided to participate at Aqua Nor 2017. Scotland’s expertise in aquaculture stems from their science- and facts-based approach to fish health and production. No other country worldwide can boast a higher number of world-class universities per head of population – and the graduates and science departments of the universities have been a key resource for Scottish companies.

Scottish innovation

Strong networks of industry and academic expertise create a collaborative environment that produces results. Joint projects include a trial to test the commercial viability of a mussel hatchery in Scotland and a project to increase the sustainable supply of cleaner-fish for use in sea lice control. “There is an innovative nature to the aquaculture industry. And the companies that are coming to Aqua Nor thrive in this environment – taking advantage of all our expertise in life sciences, fish health, biosciences – and of course technology and engineering. The Scottish aquaculture industry is well regulated and renowned for its high standards”, says Dr Andrea McColl, Senior Development Manager Life Sciences at HIE.

Aquaculture important for employment

The aquaculture industry is important for Scotland, in particular for the Highlands and Islands, providing valuable employment in the coastal areas. The Scottish aquaculture industry and the Scottish Government share the ambition to see it double by 2030.

Positioned for growth
The companies attending Aqua Nor are all looking for international growth. “The technology, knowledge, products and services we bring with us have been used successfully along the Scottish coast line – and we believe our expertise and experience is a valuable addition to the global industry”, says Dr McColl.

High expectations
This is the first time attending Aqua Nor for McColl and several of her travel companions. “We expect a high number of visitors at our stand and look forward to showing them what we have to offer. We regard Aqua Nor as the most important aquaculture exhibition, so our expectations are high”, Dr McColl adds. The Scottish Pavilion will host a networking reception, making it easy to connect with the Scottish industry representatives and learn more about their products and services.
