15/06/2015: Discounters rise to the top in sustainable fish awards

Aldi has scooped the MSC Convenience Retailer of the Year award at this year’s MSC UK Awards. The discounter shot to the top of the table to win the award with competitor Lidl in close second place. This year’s awards also saw John West win the Canned Fish Brand of the Year award for the first time.

Sainsbury’s consolidated its leading position as Supermarket of the Year for the second year running while Waitrose also managed a second year with their fish counters winning Fish Counter of the Year. Birds Eye’s long-term commitment to sustainable fish saw them take the Frozen Seafood Brand of the Year again.

Toby Middleton, Senior Country Manager for the MSC said: “It was clear after last year’s awards that the competition would be particularly tough in some categories. It’s a huge congratulations to our new winners this year, they have made enormous efforts to reach the top. It’s worth considering as well, those companies that have managed to hang on to their awards for the second year running. Reaching the top is hard, but staying there amid strong competition shows a long-term commitment that is supporting sustainable fishing and helping to drive change at sea.”
