20/11/2014: Fisheries Policy detrimental to our environment

by Lee Dalton, Rylands Nook, Fairview Road, Weymouth, UK

"Whatever our position on the EU, I don’t think many people can be happy about the way the Common Fisheries Policy works for the UK," Lee Dalton says in the UK's Dorset Echo.

"Not only is it environmentally damaging, it helps to destroy the local economy by putting small-scale fisher folk out of work.

"The EU’s Common Fisheries Policy results in between 40 and 60 per cent of fish caught by trawlers being thrown back into the sea dead!

"How on earth did we agree to foreign factory ships taking the bulk of the fish in British waters?

"But would it be better if the ships were not foreign-owned? The problem lies in the methods not the ownership.

"I think most of us are agreed that we need to protect our seas, ensure that the diversity of sea life is preserved and if there is going to be fishing, it is carried out in a sustainable manner.

"The Common Fisheries Policy has been disastrous in all aspects. Once again democracy has failed us all if the decisions are taken without our knowledge and agreement. We need to bring our politicians to account," he adds.
