5/11/13: Taiwan's tilapia controversy, lice eater feed breakthrough

In a controversy that may be familiar to seasoned aquaculture-watchers, an unfavourable South Korean media report about tilapia farming in Taiwan has caused uproar among aquaculture organizations there, who say the bad press has resulted in huge losses for local farmers, who rely on exports for 60 percent of their market.

A recent study from the Norwegian Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES) has identified the optimum nutritional composition of feed for ballan wrasse, a key step towards large-scale farming of the cleaner-fish species. It is hoped that wrasse can ultimately be used as to combat sea lice in farmed salmon.
