05/08/13: Dispute over Ireland's largest salmon farm; aquaculture in Bhutan; growth of Tasmanian aquaculture

Plans for the Republic of Ireland's largest salmon farm have caused controversy with islanders campaigning against it.

Plans to double the output of Ireland's biggest salmon farm in the remote Aran Islands have been met with controversy by islanders.

Critics of the proposals to double the 15,000-tonne annual output argue it threatens the environment and wild salmon and sea trout stocks.

However, supporters say it is an under-developed resource badly needed in recession against those arguing it threatens the environment and wild salmon and sea trout stocks.

This article by the National Centre for Aquaculture gives a neat overview of aquaculture in Bhutan. The current output of farmed fish in Bhutan is a just 64 mt, a figure which pales into insignificance when compared with the annual import of some 6,000 mt from neighbouring countries.

Aquaculture in Tasmania is on the rise according to statistics released by the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE).

Hugh Griffiths from DPIPWE told ABC that the total value of agriculture and seafood once packed and processed was AU$2.85 billion.

Twenty-five percent of Tasmanian food is consumed in the state, with the remaining 75 percent is exported to the Australia mainland and further afield.

Griffiths says Tasmanian farmers now feed an estimated 2 million people worldwide.
