Island nations fail to move WCPFC's scientific committee

Island nations in the Pacific who joined with conservation groups have been unable to convince all members of the Western and Central Pacific FisheriesCommission (WCPFC) to adopt more rigorous measures to protect tuna.

According to the Science and Development Network, these nations, with the support of Australia, were not able to reach a deal with the United States, European Union, China and Japan about prospective measures to conserve big-eye tuna stocks. WCPFC's Scientific Committee has repeatedly warned of the overfishing of big-eye tuna, which is 80 percent depleted. Likewise, yellowfin tuna is being fished to the limit of sustainability.
