A review of Aquaculture and the Environment

In this second edition of Aquaculture and the Environment (2004) author T.V.R. Pillay attempts to brings together all aspects pertinent to the environmental consequences of aquaculture development, with a view to assisting future aquacultural projects.

Chapter one is the preface and introduction to the book and its contents.

In Chapter two and three he looks at water quality of aquaculture farms, open water for stock building and stocks enhancement. Conflicts with other users, sedimentation and obstruction of water flow. Also dealt with are effluent discharge, chemical residues, hypernutrification and eutrophication and other effects.

In Chapters four and five, he looks at the extent of environmental impacts using quantification of effluent discharge, and the assessment of pollutive effects. Also he looks at the sighting and design of farms.

Chapter six deals with the use of natural resources, source and utilization of land water resources. He also covers the use of animal waste, sewage, heated water effluents and recycling water and the use of trophic levels in aquaculture.

Chapters seven, eight and nine, cover the pattern and effect of waste discharge and the introduction of exotics and escaped of farmed species.

Chapter ten, deals with pathogens in the aquatic environment, the occurrence of pathogens, the environmental cause of disease and controlling the spread of communicable diseases.

Other areas covered in later chapters in this publication are the effects of birds and mammals in aquaculture, the safety of the aquaculture products and the sustainability of aquaculture, economics and environmental impact assessments mitigation of adverse effects and the research and regulation with in aquaculture.

An in-depth book on all aspects of aquaculture and the environment, dealing with complex issues and explaining these interactions that occur between aquaculture and the environment. A well-written book, that will help students and teachers, as well as seasoned professionals, who work within the field of aquaculture.
